Famous Twovels
_
Most teachers and YA librarians have at least heard of the authors Neil Gaiman and/or Meg Cabot. Their works range from Coraline, a dark and picture book reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's Alice to the well know and well-loved series, The Princess Diaries. In 2009, Gaimain started the 72-hour phenomenon that led to what we now know as the Twovel, with the words:"Sam was brushing her hair when the girl in the mirror put down the hairbrush, smiled & said, “We don’t love you anymore.”

Fan Fiction Author Interviews
_I wanted to authenticate my argument here by bringing in some first person opinions on fan fiction, and the communities that surround it, so I interviewed three fic authors. These three ladies write in very different ways - different universes, different character use, and with very different writing voices. While each of them presented me with a different definition of fan fiction, all of them agreed that the fandom-based communities have had positive effects on their lives, personally and artistically.
Echo, a fic author of more than a decade, states that fan fiction is "a written work not published for monetary profit written by a fan of the original material."

Another long-time fic writer, tigriswolf, told me fan fiction is "any work I write using characters I did not create".

And ironically, the "newest" of the authors I interviewed, bad company, had the most to say about the definition of fanfic. She told me that fan fiction is "an expansion of a pre-existing fictional universe – book, movie, comic, TV show, or some other form of entertainment media – that enables a writer to explore existing themes in more detail, or create adventures and characters of his/her own that fit into this “world”. It’s an overflow of imagination, a way to “see” things that will never happen, to take established fictional characters places they will never go, and to explore a story in his/her own way."
